Band News July '09 -
A bit about who we are
Handsome Dave (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Harmony Vocals) - I’ve been playing guitar since I was old enough to walk. I'm fortunate to have been raised in a musical family, both parents are in at least one bluegrass band. I’ve been playing Bluegrass and other styles of music steadily since 1982 and I’ve always had a particular affinity for any music that is a little bit left of the mainstream. Some of my favorites are Gram Parsons, John Hartford, Gillian Welch, Alvin and the Chipmunks and of course more traditional players like Doc Watson and Tony Rice. If you meet me the one thing you should remember is that I’ve never met a beer I didn’t like.

Ruby Marble (Rhythm Guitar, Lead Vocals, Harmony Vocals) ~ I started singing the moment I took my first breath but started playing guitar as a late bloomer. I grew up in a household where “Saturday night music” was a fixed part of the family schedule. Musicians would gather in our living room for jam sessions where I learned to sing harmonies and fetch beers. After many years as a closet bluegrass/folk singer I ventured out of my living room to share my passion for music with others. My vocal inspirations include Alison Krauss, Patsy Cline, and Cass Elliot. Other favorites include John Prine, Woody Guthrie, and Donovan.

Spike (Guitar, Mandolin, Lead Vocals, Harmony Vocals) - I've Been playing guitar forever, but took up Mandolin around Y2K time because it was easier to grab quick and run to the hills with. I'm mostly a folk and country musician and have been playing and singing since the 70s. I've played Solo for many years, as well as in Duo acts and Country bands. A Blues musician friend of mine says to me, "Everything you play sounds Country." Country musicians tell me I sound "bluesy." But since joining up with Dave & Turbo I've been playing a lot more Bluegrass style. So now people say much nicer things when they hear us, like, "that ain't Bluegrass . . . . . "

Turbo (Banjo) -After considering famous banjo players like Tone Deaf Tony and Six Fingered Fred, the members of SolesRest, in a default situation, asked Turbo to join the band and become one of the musical family. Having bought his first banjo back in 1985 before knowing what bluegrass even sounded like he immersed himself in his playing while learning to ignore the multitude of banjo jokes that come with the position. Turbo hopes his banjo playing will inspire a sense of well being in the listeners, peaceful introspection and slow down global warming.

Upcoming Shows
We'll be playing at the annual Bluegrass Appreciation day in Nampa, Sunday Sept.20th This was a blast last year.
We're really looking forward to the Snake River Bluegrass Festival in Heyburn on Aug. 8th. There's a great amphitheatre there by the river, just a great venue for summer music. There will be jamming all day in the park there and the stage shows start ~3:30 PM.
How did you come up with that name?
Soles Rest is the name of a creek at the foothills of the Danskin Mountains just southeast of Boise where Spike lives. It acquired the name in the Oregon Trail days as a watering hole a day or two outside of Boise.
